The month of July hasn’t come short of expectations, showering all parts of BC with enough sunshine to let us forget about the rainy weather we get for the majority of the year. Yes, summer is definitely here and what better way to spend it then in the glorious heat itself!
This summer, I was able to attend the annual Vancouver International Soccer Festival (VISF) at David Livingstone Park. VISF promotes global peace and social change through soccer with multi-ethnic teams representing a variety of countries.
At the event I spotted our very own Tanning is Out (TIO) ambassador team who were there to promote the Tanning is Out initiative on the field. They were actively walking the sidelines providing players and audience members with sunscreen.
I was able to interview a few people about their thoughts on sun safety and tanning. Most of the individuals that I spoke with didn’t like tanning and felt that it was unnecessary and unhealthy. One of the players mentioned that most people forget to wear sunscreen because they forget to bring it to events like this. Good thing the TIO ambassadors were there on seen and to the rescue!
Here are some of the responses I received:
What do you think of the Tanning is Out initiative?
“I think it’s great. I’m really glad you guys are here. The orange umbrellas really stand out. I really hope the message is going out. I think some people think it’s still cool to be darker. Some people think it’s better to be tanned, but I personally am all for getting the word out about [Tanning is Out].” - Barbara Mulleder, VISF Director
“I’m not a fan of outdoor or indoor tanning. I don’t recommend it either just because it has harsh side affects like sunburns and cancer. In the end it’s all harmful for you. If the TIO team wasn’t here today, I wouldn’t have applied sunscreen and would’ve probably got sun burnt. I don’t think a lot of people think to bring sunscreen wherever they go.” - Fadel Abdul, Soccer Player at the VISF
Do you practice sun safety?
“I will now after coming so close to getting a sunburn!” - Fadel Abdul, Soccer Player at the VISF
“I don’t do outdoor tanning, but I do a lot of outdoor sports so I always try to wear sunscreen. But I definitely don’t think tanning is a great recreational activity.”
“I think more youth should see photos of how old people look when they tan too much. I think it’s great that the TIO team was here because I know a lot of people would’ve forgotten to re-apply sunscreen if they weren’t here. We always forget to apply when we don’t have it and that’s when you get totally toasted and we never know what that can cause.” - Mark Groves, Soccer Player at the VISF
“I think it’s great at an event like this. I think it’s important for people to know the effects of the sun and to remind them to wear sunscreen.” - Dana Rudelier, Soccer Player at the VISF
“I think it’s awesome because people don’t get to see too much about skin cancer.” - Belina Bath, TIO Ambassador

All in all, I think it’s safe to say that most people are aware of the dangers of tanning and the impact it may have. However, there are still some people out there with the perception that tanning is safe and harmless. That’s why it’s vital for people to be proactive by taking a stand against the dangers of UV rays and being safe in the sun: wear a hat, sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen (and remember to re-apply!).
I would like to end with this quote by Albert Einstein – “Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means.”
What are your thoughts on the TIO initiative or tanning? Leave me a message below!
Until next time,
Jennifer Wu
